Chapter 21 (A) Additional Material

Our Adult Institute Class (for whom this blog is dedicated), requested that we post the following, from a BYU Education Week presentation, which we went over in class. I apologize that, because this text comes from slides in a powerpoint, the hard returns make for a crazy printout if you want to print the whole thing. However, you can copy and paste into word and then make all of the changes I did not make. I just assumed most of you wanted the references, and not necessarily the whole thing.

D&C 93:2
“…I am the true light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world;”
Elder Dallin H. Oaks
“The Light of Christ,
which is sometimes called
the Spirit of Christ
or the Spirit of God…”
(Ensign, Nov 1996, 59)
Moroni 7:16
“For behold,
the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil”
D&C 46:11
“…to every man is given a gift by the Spirit of God.”
D&C 84:45-46
“…whatsoever is light is Spirit, even the
Spirit of Jesus Christ.
And the Spirit giveth light to every man that
cometh into the world;”

President N. Eldon Tanner
…the truths discovered by such men as Sir Isaac Newton, Thomas Edison, and Albert Einstein were actually revealed to them through the light of Christ.
(Ensign, May 1978, 14)

includes many things,
one important manifestation
Elder Robert D. Hales:
“It is because of the
Light of Christ that all men know good from evil—
the guidance of a conscience.”
(Ensign, May 1979, 77)
President Marion G. Romney:
“The Lord holds you responsible for your own conduct from the time
you are eight years of age…

At birth, each of you was enlightened by the Spirit of Christ. This Spirit, sometimes called conscience, gave you a sense of right and wrong even before
you were eight years old.”
(Ensign, May 1978, 39)
President Harold B. Lee
“That light [the Light of Christ] never entirely goes out … unless we commit the unpardonable sin.”
(The Teachings
of Harold B. Lee, 101)

Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin:
“As the sun gives
life and light to the earth,
a spiritual light gives nourishment to our spirits. We call this
the Light of Christ…

Remember the
experiment in
grade school?
Elder Kevin W. Pearson,
“It [desire] is like
spiritual photosynthesis.
The influence of the Holy Ghost, acting on the Light of Christ within every human being…

“produces the spiritual equivalent of a chemical reaction—a stirring,
a change of heart,
or a desire to know.
(Ensign, May 2009, 38)
Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin
“The Light of Christ… encourages all to… learn again the truths that we knew in our premortal existence but have forgotten in mortality.”
(Ensign, May 2003, 26)
Elder Joseph Fielding Smith
“The Holy Ghost
should not be confused with
the Spirit [the Light of Christ] which fills the immensity of space and which is every where present…

“This other Spirit
is impersonal
and has no size,
nor dimensions;
it proceeds forth from the presence of the Father and the Son and is in all things…

“We should speak of the Holy Ghost as a personage as ‘he’ and this other Spirit as ‘it’…”
(Doctrines of Salvation,1:49-50)
Elder Harold B. Lee:
“Every one of you born into this world enjoys the blessing of this Light [of Christ] that shall never cease to strive with you until you are led to that further light from the gift of the Holy Ghost…” (Doctrines of the Gospel, Institute Student Manual, 44)

So the

President Boyd K. Packer
“The Light of Christ”
“What Everyone Called to Preach the Gospel, Teach the Gospel, or Live the Gospel Should Know”
(Ensign, April 2005, 8)
President Boyd K. Packer:
“…the Light of Christ is also described in the scriptures as “the Spirit of Jesus Christ” … “the Spirit of the Lord” … “the Spirit of truth” … “the light of truth” … “the Spirit of God” … and “the Holy Spirit” …

Some of these terms are also used to refer to the Holy Ghost.”

(Ensign, Apr 2005, 8)

Brent Bulloch
“I Have a Question”
“What is the difference between the Holy Ghost and the Spirit of Christ, and the Light of Christ?”
(Ensign June 1989, p. 26)
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf
“We know what matters most in life—the Light of Christ teaches this to everyone…
Our weakness is in failing to align our actions
with our conscience.”
(Ensign, May 2009, 59)
Hymn 273Truth Reflects upon Our Senses
“Truth reflects upon our senses,
Gospel light reveals to some.”
(verse 1)
D&C 130:22
“…the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us.”
1 Nephi 11:11
“…I spake unto him as a man speaketh; for I beheld that he was in the form of a man; yet nevertheless, I knew that it was the Spirit of the Lord; and he spake unto me as a man speaketh with another.”
President Marion G. Romneyquoting James E. Talmage
“That the [Holy Ghost] is capable of manifesting Himself in the form and figure of man is indicated by the wonderful interview between the Spirit and Nephi…

“in which He revealed Himself to the prophet, questioned him concerning his desires and belief, instructed him in the things of God, speaking face to face with the man.”
(Ensign, May 1974, 90)
1 Nephi 10:17
“…I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might
and hear,
and know of these things,
by the power of the Holy Ghost…”
John 14:26
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
Elder Glenn L. Pace:
“We first learned the gospel in our heavenly home.
We have come to this earth with a veil of forgetfulness. And yet lingering
in each of our spirits
are those dormant memories…

The Holy Ghost can part the veil and bring those things out of their dormancy. Often my reaction to a supposedly newfound truth is, ‘Oh, I remember that!’”
[then quotes John 14:26]

(Ensign, May 2007, 79)

Great Resource

(“Scriptural Index to the Latter-day Prophets”)
Joseph Smith
“Cornelius received the Holy Ghost before he was baptized, which was the convincing power of God unto him of the truth of the Gospel, but he could not receive the gift of the Holy Ghost until after he was baptized…

Had he not taken this sign or ordinance upon him, the Holy Ghost which convinced him of the truth of God, would have left him”
(Doctrines of the Gospel,
Institute Student Manual, 44)

To the

Gospel Fundamentals
“If we do not obey the Holy Ghost and if we begin to do wrong things, the Holy Ghost leaves us.” (p. 77)
Joseph Smith:
“In our interview with the President [Van Buren], he interrogated us wherein we differed in our religion from the other religions of the day.

“Brother Joseph said we differed in
the mode of baptism,
And the gift of the Holy Ghost
by the laying of hands.”
(History of the Church, 4:42)
